Dr. Smith was born in 1951 to Dr. Raymond J. Smith, DDS, and Ann Elizabeth Smith. He has three siblings named Diane, Donald, and Dale. He chose to move from his hometown Miami after graduating from high school and attend the University of Florida, where he majored in chemistry and earned his Bachelor’s in Science. He then pursued his Master’s in Education at the University of Florida’s graduate school before moving on to achieve his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1978 from Emory University.

After school, Dr. Smith moved to Sarasota, FL. He worked with Dr. Harold M. Shaffer for two years before purchasing his dental practice in 1980, practicing general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry until 2005. During this time, he also served as the President of the Sarasota County Dental Association in 1985 and the President of the West Coast Dental Association in 1995. Other positions and achievements include:

  • Serving as a Delegate to the Florida Dental Association and West Coast Dental Association for 20 years.
  • Serving on the peer review committee for the Sarasota County Dental Association for 25 years.
  • Serving as editor of the West Coast Dental Association newsletter in 1990 and 1991.
  • Being inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists in 1996.

Dr. Smith chose to retire from dentistry in 2005, moving to Arcadia with his family. However, he re-entered the field in Public Health, serving as a Senior Dentist in 2007 before becoming the dental director of the Desoto County Health Department in 2008. In 2014, he additionally became the dental director at Highlands County Health Department. He chose to retire from these positions on August 15, 2016.

Dr. Smith and his wife Kimberly have six children named Joseph, Keeley, Brittany, Bethany, Michaela, and Jacob. They also have six grandchildren named Nora, Mark, Layla, Stellan, Benjamin, and Finley. Outside of dentistry, his hobbies include flying, fishing, spearfishing, bird watching, canoeing, camping, cycling, and hunting. He is a faithful Christian and serves as the director of Celebrate Recovery at Pine Level United Methodist Church in Arcadia. He also works as a Senior Lay Minister and is one of the leaders of the children’s church and children’s Sunday school classes.
